Jockeys

The Australian Racing Board Ltd in conjunction with the Australian Jockeys’ Association and the Principal Racing Authorities on behalf of all licensed jockeys and apprentices have appointed Gow-Gates Insurance Brokers (Australasia) Pty Ltd to arrange the Personal Accident Insurance Plan outlined below.
Who can make a claim?
A claim can be made by licensed jockeys or apprentices licensed in Australia. The principal cover provided by this policy is an injury cover, for injuries occurring during the period of insurance starting from 30 June 2009 within Australia.
The insurer is Lumley Insurance, who has been providing insurance protection to Australians since the 1920s.
What benefits am I entitled to?
Weekly Accidental Benefits
Benefits up to $300 per week for 52 weeks, 24 hour / 365 days cover for injuries that last for more than 7 days. The personal accident payment will supplement the workers compensation up to 100% of your average weekly earnings. Injuries, where workers compensation is not payable, will be covered up to $300 per week. “Temporary Total Disablement” means Total Disablement which lasts for longer than the Waiting Period and which is not Permanent Total Disablement. “Total Disablement means the Insured Person is wholly and continuously prevented from engaging in their usual occupation, profession, business or employment and are under regular care and acting in accordance with the instructions or professional advice of a duly qualified medical practitioner.”
Accidental Death & Capital Benefits
This refers to a lump sum payment of up to $250,000 depending on the injury as per table of conditions. Please refer to the policy schedule and wording below.
“Permanent Total Disablement" means Total Disablement which has lasted for at least 12 consecutive calendar months from the date of your Injury and which is certified by an independent Medical Practitioner as beyond hope of improvement and which entirely prevents the Insured Person forever engaging their usual full-time occupation as a jockey or a related occupation within the Horse Racing Industry. How to make a claim?
1. You can access the claim form below.
2. It is important to lodge the claim 30 days from the date you sustained the injury. The injury form should be completed by you and forwarded to the Gow-Gates claims manager.
3. You will be advised what information, medical and other certificates and evidence is required by the insurer. Please note that providing all the information requested in a timely manner will quicken the finalisation of your claim.
4. Electronic payment will be made by Lumley directly to you within 7 days of receiving all the required information and after your claim has been approved. Periodic payments will be done fortnightly.
5. If you require an update on the status of your claim, or have any inquiries, you may contact the Gow-Gates office.
6. Who can I talk to about an issue or complaint?
Due to current regulations, if you have a complaint, you should contact Lumley directly. Lumley will then either resolve or attempt to resolve the complaint immediately and if it is unresolved, Lumley will refer the matter to their Internal Dispute Resolution Committee (IDRC).
If you are not satisfied with the decision of the IDRC, you may access the services of an independent external dispute resolution body called the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS).

Points to remember
- All claims must be advised to Gow-Gates within 30 days of injury;
- No coverage is provided for injuries arising from;
- Pre-existing injuries or physical congenital conditions;
- Injuries arising from sexually transmitted disease or Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) or any variance vincluding Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and AIDS Related Complex (ARC) or Hepatitis C;
- Deliberately self inflicted or intentionally caused injury or suicide, self harm or attempted suicide;
- The insured person is under the influence or addiction of alcohol or drugs, other than drugs prescribed by ca medical practitioner;
No further compensation shall be paid under this policy if the insured person reaches 65 years of age. This is a summary only.
